Genetic Variation is Essential for Natural Selection

For species to evolve there must be genetic variability that causes differences in phenotype. This comes from random mutation and new allele combinations, recombination, and gene transfer.

If everyone is the same, then nobody has an advantage to reproduce better and nobody is naturally selected. Variation is a requirement for natural selection.

Mutation

Errors in DNA replication and repair can lead to mutation. These mutations are constantly occurring at random and can be beneficial, harmful, or neutral, depending on the gene they are changing and how much it changes the phenotype. Tiny variations in phenotype are always appearing. If you need to review mutations, go back to Chapter 4.
